Two more black men have been shot and killed by police in the last 48 hours. Whatever fears the policemen involved may have had, whether or not the slain had guns, or records, or whatever other reasons might be offered to exonerate the officers -- this happened for two interconnected reasons:
1) all Americans remain caught in a web of institutional racism that murders people of color and poisons us all, and
2) " For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." (1 Timothy 6:10 KJV)
What else can you call it but greed -- for money, for power, for position -- that allows white Americans to pretend that black bodies are not human bodies. What else can we call it when, in order to protect the white elite from paying their share into society, police officers are turned into legalized extortionists of the poor? And what can we call it but a particularly pernicious racist greed that teaches that human beings of color are the "other" and therefore it is okay to extort them?
This is the system that we are murdering people to protect. The violence and the greed go hand in hand. Sometimes willfully. Often simply as a horrific side effect that occurs when a whole society demonizes and dehumanizes a part of itself.
For love of money and all the pointless stupidity that that represents, we have pierced ourselves through with many sorrows, but it is black people who are bearing the cost. #blacklivesmatter
