To me, nothing quite epitomizes all that is wrong with our society as our prison system. And things just seem to keep getting worse. Now, according to Mic reporter Jack Smith, jails around the country are going so far as to remove in-person visitation altogether, switching to a video conference only visitation system -- one where the video conference company can charge families ridiculous fees to speak to their loved ones.

We are allowing these companies to extort money from poor families, already devastated and under economic hardship. Dostoevsky wrote that "[t]he degree of civilisation in a society is revealed by entering its prisons." By that measure, we are not doing very well.
