This piece by Kent L. Brintnall brilliantly delves into the conservative religious motivations behind North Carolina's abysmal HB2, passed in March. And then he goes further to expose how those religious motivations, sincere are not, are used as a tool to gain control over and "foment psychic and physical violence against trans*, gender-variant and queer bodies, against bodies of color, against workers’ bodies."
I was already strongly against HB2 before I read this, but I'm not sure I full understood all the implications this insidious law has to promote a vision of the (white, male, and wealthy) State as final and absolute authority over those it determines to be deviant. Not to diminish the importance of the "bathroom" issues that have received most of the coverage, but the bill is about much more than that. I strongly recommend you read this.
