White Debt

For those of you who, like me, are white and therefore the inheritors and beneficiaries of a racist society, this essay from Eula Biss is spot on. It is an acknowledgment of the debt we owe, the complicated feelings of having a debt we did not ourselves actively create (though we are nonetheless complicit), and an inspiration to work against the system that gave us both power and guilt.

This has been a season, a long season, of wounding. I urge you to read this, to meditate on it, and to pray as we come closer to the celebration of the birth of our savior that we may truly find salvation: true freedom not through ignorance or denial, but through justice.
